LHMS Pre-Academies
The LHMS Pre-Academy program helps prepare middle school students with real-world exposure to career specific curriculum through electives.
The intent of the Pre-Academies is to provide students with occupational exploratory courses and the potential to earn high school credit while still enrolled in the middle school.
These programs give students valuable work place skills and prepare them for high school, college, and the workforce of the future.

A.E.R. - Aviation, Engineering, Robotics
The A.E.R. Pre-Academy here at Lakeland Highlands Middle seeks to create a challenging learning environment that encourages high expectations for success for all of our students with the understanding that diversity of gender, physical or mental ability, culture, and background is a strength to be respected. This academy will provide hands-on learning experiences that focus on the Engineering Process from design to creation. Students will be given the opportunity to solve technological problems using a variety of tools, materials, processes, and systems while gaining an understanding of the effects technology has on our everyday lives. A primary goal is for students to continue their STEM education at the next levels while preparing for a technology related career.
Courses offered in this academy include:
- Exploration of Production Technology
- Exploration of Aerospace Technology
- Foundations of Robotics (High School Credit)
Agriculture
The Agriculture Pre-Academy will provide hands-on learning experiences that will focus on building awareness and understanding of agriculture. Students will learn about animal science, plant science, natural resources, and the food system. Students will also have the opportunity to join FFA, Future Farmers of America, where they can develop premier leadership skills.
Arts & Entertainment
The Fine Arts Pre-Academy includes many facets of creative expression. From communications to music to theater and drama, students will be able to hone their talents and embrace their freedom to express themselves. This pre-academy also includes courses in TV production.
Arts & Entertainment courses offered include:
- Visual Arts (2D Art, 3D Art, Portfolio Art, Art Appreciation)
- Performing Arts (Drama, Chorus I-III, Band, Symphonic,
Concert, Jazz, Orchestra)
- TV Production
- Spanish (Spanish I/II - High School Credit)
- Physical Education (Team Sports, Extreme Sports, and
Fitness)
Culinary Arts
The Culinary Arts Pre-Academy gives students background and hands on experience in the food service industry.
Culinary courses offered in this academy include:
- Exploring Hospitality & Culinary w/Career Planning
- Fundamentals of Culinary
Medical
Do you have a passion to help others and are thinking about a future career in the medical field? In the Medical Pre-Academy students will learn many skills in a hands-on lab setting. Studies will include instruction in the use of safety procedures, tools, equipment, materials, and processes related to health occupations.
Medical courses offered in this academy include:
- Exploration of Health Occupations & Career Planning (level 1- Year long)
- Intro to Health Science (level 2 - Semester 1), Orientation to Nursing (level 2 - Semester 2)
- Medical Skills (level 3 - High School Credit - Year long)
Media Design
Are you interested in gaining the technological foundations to prepare yourself for an ever-changing world? Media Design Pre-Academy students will learn the equipment, programs, and software currently used by professionals today. Students can explore graphic design, animation techniques, business software and more.
Media Design courses offered in this academy include:
- Computer Applications 1 & 2
- Digital Design
- Web Design
- Yearbook
Video Game Design
Are you a Video Game buff? Have you ever wondered how the games are developed and published? The Video Game Design Pre-Academy provides a hands-on approach to course content in the foundational knowledge and skills of digital technologies associated with web and software development as well as Internet communications and computer programming in the information technology industry with a focus on video gaming. Students will be provided opportunities to work with various software programs to gain an understanding of the fundamental structure and process to the development of interactive digital programs.
Accelerated
Students with a proven record of high academic performance enjoy project-based learning while enhancing their academic learning with rigorous instruction. Classes prepare students for high school AP courses, dual enrollment, and post secondary education.
